Visual Simulation tool puts Multimodal in the driving seat of modern transport planningDate: 2017-05-24 | Category: Project Updates
Using the specialist micro-simulation traffic modelling software VISSIM, often in combination with high quality 3D rendered output, we are able to demonstrate in video format how new highway and public realm proposals will operate in real time – making traffic plans easy to understand for local councillors, planners and the general public.
This approach was successfully used on a project working as part of a larger team of consultants for Leicester City Council on their design and feasibility study for highway improvements to the city's Belgrave Road, known as the 'Golden Mile'.
One of the main routes through Leicester city centre, Belgrave Road carries around 26,500 vehicles on average each day and is subject to regular bus services and high pedestrian footfall. When combined with the densely packed terraced housing that lines adjacent streets, this can produce complex and disorganised interactions with the highway.
VISSIM was originally utilised by Multimodal for the feasibility and design process, but it later became central to the consultation phase for the scheme. We used the tool to create an accurate simulation video displaying how traffic and people would use the proposed road layouts, which was then promoted at the public exhibition events to members of the public and key stakeholders.
